Belgium is famous for having thousands of different beers. Belgium had, for instance, 379 active breweries in 2020. Since 2016, Belgian beer is even listed in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Belgians consumed on average 70 liters of beer that same year. Although, by comparison, in Czechia, Austria, and Germany more than 100 liters of beer were consumed per capita.
Belgian beer is an international beverage
Belgian beer consumption was far from being confined to the country. Whilst Belgium produced 20 million hectoliters of Beer in 2016, it also exported consequent amounts of it to the European Union and outside of the EU.
